The evening’s concert features vocalist Kevin Wiley and Barbara Varellas on piano, performing the songs of Samuel Barber, one of America’s greatest 20th-century classical composers. Trained at the Curtis Institute of Music, Barber was a triple prodigy in voice, piano and composition. His love of poetry, notably the works of Irish poets James Joyce and James Stephens, as well as American James Agee, is well represented in the first half of tonight’s program, while the second half offers one of Barber’s greatest vocal achievements, Hermit Songs.

An Evening of Modern
and Ancient Music for Guitar Ensemble
This program features the music of the Zeidel Trio. The works performed are culled from music of the ancient past and music of the immediate present. Three of the works have been written for the groups playing, while three are taken from vocal music of the Renaissance and are arranged by members of the ensemble. Our goal in presenting this program is to achieve a balance of new and ancient music while exploring the lyric and sonic possibilities of the guitar. Faculty performers will be Jeff Jones, and Scott Zeidel, with student guest Damjan Rakonjac.
