DIRK HAGNER THE HUNGRY EYE: RÜCKBLICK 1999-2009 |
| |
| Dirk Hagner was born, raised, and educated in Germany, where he studied drawing, printmaking, photography, and painting at the Folkwang School of Fine Arts. Working in new directions, he constantly finds himself drawing historic, geographic, political, and artistic connections to the past. Old processes like woodcut and etching are married with photo intaglio and fax machine. Influences from German Expressionism meet the sensibilities of line and space of the Far East. Above all, everything is about drawing: “We reduce the world to two dimensions and lines. However, because of this reduction, in our best moments, art is capable of revealing some of its lasting truth and beauty.” His work can be spotted on the sets of a variety of entertainment dramas such as CSI Miami, Brothers and Sisters, House, and Shakespeare Family. |

CRAIG DEINES |
| |
| In Craig Deines’ new series of carved wood panels, he has made a conscious decision to move to a flat/relief format. Deines, who usually works in 3D, explains this new choice of direction, “It’s so that the works can live more as an idea, and scale can be imagined easier.” Most of his images use thought bubbles in order to show how they take on different meaning according to the composition or structure they are in. He refers to these bubbles as: “Ideas,” our identity, our cultural identity, dreams, or our potential. Deines, who refers to the carved marks as brush strokes and the surface as a “skin or vital material,” thinks of these compositions as taking on their own life, growing and changing after his work is complete. |
